Robert Damper, Kenny G Keyboardist, Releases Love Song “Feel So Good” featuring Kenny G and Skyler Jett for Valentines Day
Seattle WA. Seattle native Robert Damper, Kenny G’s trusted keyboard player, musical director and co-collaborator for over 25 years, has played music on all of the biggest stages in the world, the most prestigious jazz festivals and the biggest television shows. Damper’s performed with some of the most important artists in the world, from R&B legends, Stevie Wonder & Patti LaBelle, to jazz greats, Roy Haynes, Jack DeJohnette and Branford Marsalis.
Traveling the world non-stop has made it hard for Damper to find the time to record his own music, but during breaks from touring, he recorded and produced music at his home studio in Seattle and in studios all over the world. The beautiful result is the 13 song D Tales Project.
Feel So Good, the first single from the CD, released in time for Valentine’s Day, features Kenny G and vocalist Skyler Jett. The song was mixed by famed Swiss jazz producer/mixer Urs Weisendanger. The full CD will follow this spring.
When asked why he decided to finally release his music now, Damper said, “The music is finally at a place that I feel it is done. It’s time to get it out. “ The collection is mostly Damper originals and co-writes, with a few special interpretations of some of his favorite Jazz, Pop and R&B covers from Antonio Carlos Jobim (Wave) Burt Bachrach (Say A Little Prayer) and Thom Bell ( Betcha by Golly).
D Tales Project is also a tribute to his dear friend and former Kenny G drummer, Bruce Carter, who passed away in 2006. “Bruce played such a vital role on so many of these tracks and he was an incredibly important influence on me and my music,“ Damper says, remembering his friend fondly.
Damper wrote Feel So Good with R&B singer, Skyler Jett, a one-time vocalist with Kenny G’s band, who has subsequently worked with scores of music legends including Sly Stone, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Patti Austin, Sting and Chaka Khan, to name just a few. He also replaced Lionel Ritchie when he left the Commodores and toured with them in over 30 countries.
This is a very personal song for Skyler, who wrote the song for his wife. He remembers the moment fondly, “ I wrote the song while sitting at the piano just before we married. The song came through me as my heart was filled with love and awe that life had orchestrated our paths to cross. She is a huge source of inspiration for in my life and an amazing and creative soul. This is a perfect song for Valentine’s Day. “ Not surprisingly, Kenny G is a featured soloist on this romantic old-school R&B ballad.
After high school, Damper was an integral part of a legendary Seattle funk/soul band, Cold, Bold & Together, which featured his high school friend, Kenny Gorelick, better know as Kenny G. Moving back to Seattle to play in Kenny G’s band, after a decade playing in the New York Jazz and R&B scene, turned out to be a smart move.
Damper has been playing music since he was in first grade. He attended the University of Washington, Seattle’s prestigious music school, Cornish Institute of Allied Arts and the New England Conservatory of Music.
‘I’ve been very lucky to have a career like this,’ he says with humility and an appreciation for successfully being able to live a life of music. Now with the release of D Tales Project, a busy global touring schedule and a desire to release more CDs and expand his work in film composing, Damper is focused and energized for whatever musical adventures the future holds.
